Universal’s Broadway musical feature ‘Wicked’ gets its Witches, Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba.
The hunt for the two main characters for several months now comes to an end for Universal’s musical flick ‘Wicked’. American singer and actress Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo has Universal’s upcoming musical feature. Ariana Grande will portray the character of Glinda, The Good Witch of South. As well as Cynthia Erivo will portray the character of Elphaba, The Wicked Witch of the West.
Wicked will be a prequel to ‘The Wizard of Oz’. The story will shed light on everything leading up to Dorothy’s arrival in Oz.
Wicked is being directed by Jon M. Chu of In the Heights for Universal, who joined the project in February this year. Although Stephen Daldry, best known for The Reader and The Hours, was initially associated with the project as a director, he left it due to busy schedule. Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the lyrics and also composed the music for the Broadway show, will co-write the screenplay for Wicked with Winnie Holzman. Marc Platt is producing the upcoming musical feature. Though, he was also producer of the Broadway musical play.
Apart from singing, Grammy-winning pop star Ariana Grande is also known for her acting in TV shows such as ‘Victorius’. Grande played the lead role in this show. In addition to the Wicked movie, Grande’s upcoming film, Netflix’s. Don’t Look Up, will stream on Netflix on December 10, 2021.
On the other hand, Cynthia Erivo is known for ‘Harriet‘ and Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley starrer ‘Chaos Walking. Although Erivo has won Tony, Grammy and Emmy Awards for her role as Celie in the Broadway theater play ‘The Color Purple’. Apart from ‘Wicked’, she will next seen in Disney’s Pinocchio and Netflix’s ‘Luther’ Film.
