Sony Pictures Classics set the theatrical release date for the late director Roger Michell’s last film, ‘The Duke‘.

The long-staying drama comedy starring Helen Mirren and Jim Broadbent premiered at the Venice Film Festival on September 4, 2020. Where drama comedy was greatly appreciated by critics. Now call it the beat of time or the Covid-19 crisis, The Duke is yet to release globally.

The Duke director Roger Michell, who is best known for Nothing Hill and Venus, passed away on 22 September 2021 before its global release. But now Sony Pictures Classics has picked up the fleet to release the drama comedy feature worldwide. In this context, the studio will open the drama comedy flick to theaters in New York and Los Angeles ahead of its worldwide release. After this, the film will be released in its entirety in the coming weeks.

The Duke Plot

The drama comedy flick by Late Roger Michell is set in 1961, the story of which will follow 60-year-old taxi driver Kempton Bunton ( Jim Broadbent ). Kempton then stole Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. It was the first theft in the history of the gallery and remains so today. Kempton sent ransom notes saying he would return the painting on condition that the government agreed to provide free television to the elderly. The full story unfolds 50 years after the incident, which shows how a good man came out to change the whole world and save himself and his son’s marriage by doing so. Helen Mirren is playing Dorothy Bunton, wife of Kempton Bunton.

Richard Bean and Clive Coleman wrote the screenplay. The same Nicky Bentham has taken over as producer. Pathe’s Cameron McCracken and Jenny Borgars are executive producers. Andrea Scarso also served as executive producer for Ingenious Media and as well as Hugo Heppell for Screen Yorkshire, Peter Scarf, and Christopher Bunton.

Apart from Jim Broadbent, Aimée Kelly, Matthew Goode and Anna Maxwell Martin are also stars.

Release Date

Sony Pictures Classics has scheduled the release of the drama comedy The Duke for March 25, 2022.
