6-time nominee and 2-time Oscar winning actor Tom Hanks talks about the character he played in the 1993 drama feature Philadelphia. Actor says he cannot reprise his character Andrew Beckett in these modern times.
In an interview given to The New York Times Magazine, Tom Hanks says that, “Could a straight man do what I did in Philadelphia now? No, and rightly so,. The Whole point of Philadelphia was, ‘Don’t be afraid’. One of the reasons people weren’t afraid of that movie is that I was playing a gay man. We’re beyond that now, and I don’t think people would accept the inauthenticity of a straight guy playing a gay guy. It’s not a crime, it’s not boohoo, that someone would say we are going to demand more of a movie in the modern realm of authenticity. Do I sound like I’m preaching? I don’t mean to.”
According to Tom Hanks, he does not fit for that role in today’s time. At the same time, he has also made it clear that in today’s time the audience will not accept him Andrew Beckett who is a gay.
Apparently Tom Hanks was widely praised for his character of Andrew, who seeking justice over being fired for his HIV status in Philadelphia and won the first Oscar of his career.
Philadelphia was directed by Jonathan Demme. The film also starred Denzel Washington.
Tom Hanks previously seen in Apple+ post-apocalyptic survival feature, Finch. He will next seen in Warner Bros’ biographical musical drama, Elvis. He is portraying Elvis Presley’s manager, Tom Parker. Elvis premiered at the recently concluded 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, where the film was widely praised and received a standing ovation.
Warner Bros’ Elvis is schedule to release in theatres on June 24, 2022.
